Growth of Meggitt Into a Premier Manufacturer of Aircraft Systems
Meggitt PLC is a British aerospace and defense company that was originally established in the 1940s as a machine tool business known as Wilson Lathes. This company went public in 1947 and acquired Dorset, an engineering business, in 1964, subsequently changing its name to Meggitt Holdings, which it is known as today. A series of notable acquisitions over the years has resulted in the company’s current size and business.
In 2004, Meggitt acquired the design and manufacturing division of Dunlop Standard Aerospace Group for 700 million euros. They also acquired K&F Industries in 2007 for 930 million euros, which is the parent company of the Aircraft Braking Systems Corporation. Pacific Scientific Aerospace was acquired 3 years later in 2010. In addition, Meggitt also owns Securaplane, which makes the battery chargers for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet, and PiezoTech LLC, which makes piezo ceramics and ultrasounds. As it stands today, Meggitt currently operates the following business divisions: •
Meggitt Aircraft Braking Systems • Meggitt Control Systems • Meggitt Equipment Group • Meggitt Polymers & Composites • Meggitt Sensing Systems Each division is further subcategorized into more specific groups that are further aimed at catering towards specific niche markets and providing very specific products. Meggitt’s business model has proved to be very successful, and as a result, they have gained clients all that include commercial airlines, companies such as Boeing and Airbus, and multi-million defense contracts from countries around the world.
