Nvidia announces that it has the Tesla P100 that will power one of the World’s Fastest Computers

Agam Shah released an article on PC World on April 7th, 2016 that talks about Nvidia. Nvidia’s CEO said he was frigging excited the very next day after the company introduced the Nvidia Tesla P100. This will be the world’s fastest GPU in the history of the world which can be used to upgrade the super computer Piz Daint. There will be approximately 4500 of these GPUS that will be put into supercomputers in Switzerland at the Swiss National Super-computing Center.

There are plans for the Piz Daint computer upgrade to be deployed by the end of this year.

Shah mentions some characteristics of the Tesla P100.

The Tesla P100 has 16GB of HBM2 (High-Bandwidth Memory 2), a new type of fast memory making its way to GPUs. The memory chips are stacked on top of each other in a 3D format instead of being placed next to each other. The new format makes HBM2 a faster and denser form of memory.

The Tesla P100 will be one of the largest chips ever made. It will consist of over 150 billion transistors.  Along with this it will also have all new kinds of GPU technologies that will give Piz Daint a huge surge in horsepower.

According to PC World, the Piz Daint has 7.8 petaflops at its very peak performance. With this caliber of petaflops, the Piz Daint is considered the 7th fastest computer in the whole world. As of now, the fastest is the Tianhe-2 which is made in China. Tianhe-2 has a top performance for 54.9 petaflops. This information is based off of the Top500 list that was released in November.

Two of the world’s fastest computers use GPUs to speed up simulations and scientific applications. These computers are the Titan and the Piz Daint. The Titan is located at the U.S oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Shah talks a little hit about how the Tesla P100 has already been installed into a desktop type computer.

Nvidia has already made a desktop-type supercomputer with the Tesla P100. The DGX-1 can deliver 170 teraflops of performance, or 2 petaflops when several are installed on a rack. It has eight Tesla P100 GPUs, two Xeon CPUs, 7TB of solid-state-drive storage and dual 10-Gigabit Ethernet ports.
