Nvidia Corporation’s Tesla P100 graphics processing unit is being ready for use in one of Switzerland’s fastest super-computers.
The GPU will be the fastest the company has ever made. It will be put to the test when they use 4,500 of them to upgrade the super-computer known as Piz Daint at the Swiss National Super-computing Center in Switzerland. Providing an upgrade to this computer is no easy task, as it is already the seventh fastest computer in the world (It operates at 7,788.9, TFLOP per second – in other words, it’s extremely fast). The world’s fastest computer is China’s Tianhe-2 (MilkyWay-2) at the National Super Computer Center in Guangzhou – which astoundingly operates about seven times as fast.
Nvidia’s CEO Jen-Hsun Huang said he was, quote, “Friggin excited,” for the product to finally be put into use. Piz Daint is a bit unique for a super-computer in the sense that it uses a GPU to increase the speed. Only the Titan, used at the Oak Ridge National Lab in the United States shares that quality out of the ten fastest computers in the world.
The chip will be one of the biggest ever made. It will pack in 150 billion transistors into the device, which will provide huge horsepower for the computer. It also implements High Bandwidth Memory 2, a new technology that makes GPUs even faster.
