Pratt & Whitney Launches New PT6A-140A Turboprop Engine for General Aviation Market

Pratt & Whitney Canada, a business unit of United Technologies, has introduced the PT6A-140A engine for the general aviation market. Touted as the most powerful and fuel efficient engine on the general aviation market, the PT6A-140A is ideal for operators flying utility aircraft in high-heat and high-altitude conditions. The PT6A-140A turboprop engine was developed to meet the demands of current flyers of PT6A-backed aircraft but who wish for advanced performance specifications.

P&WC general aviation vice president Denis Parisien said,

"There are more than 70 PT6A engine models used for over 125 different aircraft applications around the globe, a testament to the PT6A's unmatched versatility, performance and reliability.”

Delivering 15% more power while consuming 5% less fuel, the PT6A-140A requires no warming up or cooling down-maximizing efficiency and productivity. The engine provides 867 mechanical shaft horsepower and 1,075 thermal mechanical shaft horsepower.

Modularly designed and externally fitted, the PT6A-140A is easily accessible for maintenance tasks. The rear-facing, reverse flow inlet and forward-facing turbine section are easily maintained. Routine engine inspections can be completed in the field or in the hangar, while still on-wing. The engine has one of the longest time-between-overhaul (TBO) intervals on the market. With a TBO interval extendable to 8,000 hours or 12 years depending on the mission, the PT6A-140A’s TBO is not tied to engine cycles.

“No one understands the needs of general aviation better than we do,” said Parisien. “We built the industry with the PT6A turboprop engine more than five decades ago and we've never stopped innovating since. These engines are a demonstration of the advancements we've made and our focus on delivering the best engines for customers and operators."

Available in 69 models, the PT6A family of engines ranges in power from 500 shp to 2,000 shp. With more than 6,500 operators in over 170 nations, the PT6A engine has over 335 million flight hours. Since entering service in the 1960s, more than 41,000 PT6A engines have been delivered.
