National Stock Numbers are 13-digit serial numbers assigned to all components that are sourced, stocked, and procured within the federal supply chain. To help classify the NSNs, the DoD developed a system of Federal Supply Groups and Federal Supply Classes. The Federal Supply Group is the first two digits of the NSN. The Federal Supply Class make up the second two digits of the NSN. Both the FSG and the FSC help to identify and categorize the component.
