CEO Attempts to Take 328 Beyond the 328
The 328 Group, composed of 328 Support Services and JETS, a UK-based MRO, has been continuously growing under the guidance of CEO Dave Jackson, who came on board back in 2006 with a plan to diversify the company through organic expansion as well as through acquisitions. New business for 328 Support Services includes increased manufacturing, MRO services, engineering, and design services.
The company is involved in manufacturing operations for aircraft interiors that include the Airbus A320 and A330 along with the Boeing 737 and 777s.This diversification in business is an attempt to lessen the company’s dependence on its Dornier 328 aircraft, unquestionably the most successful and profitable commuter airliner they produce. This turboprop-powered airliner was initially acquired in 1966 by Fairchild Aircraft, which resulted in Fairchild-Dornier. A very popular jet version, the Fairchild Dornier 328JET, was also manufactured. Between 1991 and 2000, 217 of these aircraft were built at a cost of $12 million each. Although now out of production, the aircraft is still in service with several US regional airlines along with many governments, including Australia, Botswana, USA, Austria, Canada, Colombia, Chile, Congo, Denmark, Indonesia, Malta, Nigeria, and Switzerland, among some others.
Although the company is indeed expanding and capturing a market share of other areas of the aerospace business, the Dornier 328 is still their bloodline. The maintenance and support and also spare parts manufacturing are all centered around this aircraft. They are, however, looking for acquisition opportunities each year in which to expand their business. Keep an eye on this company over the next several years as they attempt to compete with the larger and more established European providers such as Airbus.
