Eurofighter Typhoon Equipped with Brimstone 2 Missile in $228 Million Deal

Headquartered in Toulouse, France, Airbus is a European multinational aerospace and defence corporation that manufacturers aircraft parts as well as civil airliners. Airbus was originally formed as the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company (EADS), but in January of 2014 was reorganized as Airbus Group—combining the divisions for development and marketing of civil and military aircraft, as well as communications systems, missiles, space rockets, helicopters, satellites, and related systems. In February 2015, Britain’s Ministry of Defence announced that a USD$228 million deal has been signed to equip Eurofighter Typhoon combat jets with the newest Brimstone 2 surface attack missiles.

These missiles, which have already been used by Britain’s Tornado jets in Afghanistan, Libya, and Iraq, are designed to hit fast moving targets over land and sea with high accuracy and low risk of collateral damage. Each Typhoon jet will be able to carry six of these missiles. BAE Systems, Airbus Group, and Alenia Aermacchi have teamed up to manufacture the Typhoon combat jet and also own the European missile group MBDA who is responsible for producing the Brimstone missiles. Bernard Gray, the MoD’s chief of defence material, described the purpose of the multi-million dollar contract: "The integration of Brimstone 2 represents a step change in Typhoon air-to-surface capability, providing for the first time both a low collateral moving target capability and multi-weapon launchers." This integration is set to be delivered into service by Britain’s Royal Air Force towards the end of 2018. Eurofighter Typhoon is built on the strength of four European nations: UK, Germany, Italy, and Spain, and their leading aerospace and defence companies. The program supports large numbers of highly skilled and specialized jobs.

Total employment on the Eurofighter Typhoon project is estimated at more than 100,000 personnel from 400 companies across Europe. The partner companies in the program—BAE Systems, Alenia Aermacchi, and Airbus Defence & Space manage industry suppliers employing over 100,000 people across the supply chain, enriching the technology capabilities of the whole European region.
