In 1924, science historian and civic leader Bern Dibner founded Burndy Engineering Company, a name which was based on the contraction of his first name and last initial. Dr. Dibner, during his time as an engineer working on the electrical system in Cuba, realized the need to improve methods of connecting electrical conductors and also to join power system substations. As such, Dr. Dibner successfully designed a universal connector that enabled a unified grid.
The greatest benefit to his design was that this universal connector required neither welding nor soldering. His invention was a breakthrough in connector design, thus earning him 24 patents, which created a solid foundation with which to grow his company. It wasn’t until 1956 that Burndy Corporation went public. Several decades later, in 1988, they were acquired by French corporation Framatome Connectors International (FCI) and later in 2009 by Hubbell Incorporated. As a current subsidiary of Hubbell Incorporated, Burndy continues to pioneer the design of
electrical connectors on a global level. Burndy has grown significantly in order to reach its recent state.
In 2008, Burndy won awards as supplier of the year from a number of companies, including WESCO International and Border States Industries Inc, as well as the innovation award from
Graybar Electric Company. They also receive the “TED Best of the Best” award in 2009, which recognized the best electrical marketing campaigns that were put out that year. The company, now with 1,200 employees, is currently headquartered in Manchester, New Hampshire, but with manufacturing facilities elsewhere in the northeastern United States in addition to Brazil and Mexico. As a specialized manufacturer of fittings and tools for electrical utilities that are used in commercial, industrial, as well as maintenance applications, their products are certified to the following standards: ANCE, ANSI, SATM, CSA, IEC, IEEE, MILITARY, NEMA, NUPIC, SLMA, SAE, and UL. Products include connectors that are used for splicing, tapping, terminating, conducting, or grounding. ASAP Semiconductor is a leading distributor of connectors and other interconnects that are used in commercial, industrial, and maintenance applications.
