Vishay Intertechnology was founded in 1962 by Dr. Felix Zandman, named after his ancestral village in Luthuania in memory of his family members who passed away during the Holocaust. The company started out very modestly by developing foil resistors and foil resistance strain gages. However, by 1985, they had grown into one of the world’s leading manufacturers of these products, foil resistors and strain gages.
During this time period, they also began the process of acquiring many other companies, such that they could expand and become more involved as a broad-line manufacturer of electronic components. In the company’s current state today, they are one of the largest manufacturers of discrete semiconductors and passive electronic components. Vishay plans to continue its intensive growth by accelerating their development of new products and technologies, coupled with strategies to increase their market penetration.
They are continuing to design and develop new MOSFETs, power modules, miniaturized packages for TMBS resistors, and some mid and high-power capacitors. They have also unveiled such products as wireless charging systems, tablet and ultrabook computers, electric power steering and start/stop systems for automobiles, wind and solar power systems, and energy exploration equipment. Their plan on continuing this is by investing more resources into R&D, product marketing, process engineering, and their technical sales force. Their acquisitions over the last several decades have also allowed Vishay to position themselves and allow for sustainability. Notable strategic acquisitions include Dale (1985), Siliconix (1998), General Semiconductor (2001), Infineon: Infrared components business (2001), International Rectifier: PCS business (2007), and most recently MCB Industrie (2013). Vishay’s core competencies are in the following products:
