In April 2015, GKN Aerospace announced that they have received a contract from Gulfstream Aerospace to provide wing skins for its G500 and G600 business jets. The deal calls for GKN to produce upper and lower wing skins for the ultra-long jets at its advance machined structures plant in Wellington, Kansas.
These wing skins will produced in an interesting way: in order to reduce weight and maintenance, the upper wing skins will be constructed in a single piece and made without fasteners and joints. The lower ones will incorporate several panels and complex design features. Last year, Gulfstream Aerospace chose PPG Aerospace, Triumph Aerostructures - Vought Aircraft Division, Esterline, and GE Aviation to supply various components for the G500 and G600 aircraft but this year, GKN was the lucky choice.
Daniele Cagnatel, GKN Aerospace North America aero-structures CEO, said: "Our success here is founded on the depth of expertise we have in long bed machining and wing skin manufacture. At the latest count, we have produced more than 5,000 wing skins at our Wellington facility, including skins for Gulfstream's award-winning G550 aircraft." Cagnatel also said in a statement: “This important new contract reinforces our relationship with Gulfstream and this is a relationship we aim to foster and grow for the long term.
This contract also represents a major development in our strategic drive to increase our presence in the business jet market.” In addition to GKN Aerospace, the company’s other divisions include GKN Driveline, GKN Land Systems, and GKN Powder Metallurgy. As a whole, GKN employs 50,000 workers worldwide and in 2014 reported a revenue of GBP$6,982 million.
Headquartered in Redditch, Worcestershire, UK, GKN is a British multinational automotive and aerospace components company that can trace its origins back to 1759 and the birth of the Industrial Revolution.
