Raytheon has been awarded a contract from the United States Air Force to provide Advanced Medium Range Air to Air Missiles (AMRAAM). Valued at USD$528.8 million, the contract is a modification to an original Lot 28 production deal. Per the agreement, Raytheon will provide AMRAAM Lot 29 production along with other system equipment. In addition, Raytheon has to include foreign military sales to Korea, Oman, Singapore, and Thailand. Expected to be completed in 2018, work will be done at Tucson, Arizona with the contracting activity from the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center, Elgin Air Force Base, Florida.
The Advanced Medium Range Air to Air Missile is an innovative, all weather, lightweight, and cost effective missile. The missiles are able to provide active radar guidance as it uses advanced digital technology. In addition, the missiles feature an autonomous guidance and can attack low altitude targets. The weapon is also very effective in air to air combat. The mature seeker design allows the missile to quickly and accurately find targets in all types of environments. Raytheon looks to develop an extended range version of the missile for ground based air defense. Dubbed, AMRAAM-ER, this missile will be able to intercept at greater distances, higher altitudes, and will have integration to NASAMS launchers. Currently, over 36 countries have purchased the highly efficient and reliable Advanced Medium Range Air to Air Missiles for use on aircrafts such as the F-16, F-15, F/A-18, F-22, Typhoon, Gripen, Tornado, and Harrier. The F-35 is currently being tested for integration and will have full capability in 2015.
