On August 7, 2015, the State Department approved a potential Foreign Military Sale to Japan for technologies including the guided missile destroyer 7 (DDG), AEGIS Combat System (ACS) 8, Underwater Weapon System (UWS), and Cooperative Engagement Capability (CEC) for an estimated cost of around $1.5 billion.
The Defense Security Cooperation Agency has notified Congress of this potential sale on August 4, 2015.
If everything goes according to plan, Japan should receive two ship sets of the MK 7 Aegis weapon system as well as training, equipment and support for Japan’s fiscal year 2015 as well as 2016’s guided missile destroyers.
The equipment and support includes systems engineering, on-site vendor assistance, spare parts, system training, staging services, and technical services.
In doing so, Japan’s acquisition of 8 ballistic missile defense capable ships will further enhance interoperability with the US Navy.
The AEGIS Combat System is the world’s premier naval air defense system and is the sea-based element of the United States’ Ballistic Missile Defense System.
What’s great about this is that the system is integrated with radar and missile system which is capable of simultaneous operation defending against advanced air, surface and subsurface threats. Because the AEGIS is a multi-function phased array radar, it is the world’s most advanced and versatile maritime radar which is also scalable to meet the needs for a wide spectrum of ships from corvettes to aircraft carriers on missions.
