President of the United States Chooses Sikorsky Aircraft

Sikorsky Aircraft, an American aircraft manufacturer and subsidiary of the international conglomerate United Technologies Corporation, has been chosen by the US Navy to build the very next fleet of Marine One helicopters which will be utilized by the President of the United States. Sikorsky has been given the critical task of building and supporting the helicopter fleet for the president for over 57 years and looks to continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

The $1.24 billion contract that was awarded this year (2014) entails the engineering, manufacturing, modification, testing, and delivery of six S-92 helicopters as well as two trainer simulators to the US Marine Corps. The contract is expected to last until the year 2023 and is considered the first step in supplying a replacement fleet of presidential helicopters, the VXX helicopter, eventually totaling 21 aircraft. Currently, ten other countries also operate the dual-engine S-92 helicopter to transport their head of state personnel. In addition, Sikorsky has delivered more than 200 S-92 helicopters since 2004 that have been used primarily by operators in the offshore oil and gas industry or for search and rescue operations. Sikorsky expects the new VXX helicopter, which was proposed and accepted in 2013, to be just as successful.

The first of the aircraft are expected to be delivered in 2018, with the Navy expected to place orders for the first 17 aircraft in 2019. Production and delivery should be completed by the year 2023. The company, founded by Igor Sikorsky in 1925, now operates out of Stratford, Connecticut through its parent company United Technologies Corporation.
